Mama (Lactation!) Cookies - Dairy Free
A dairy-free version of our famous lactation cookies (see full description below), perfect for mamas and/or their babies with sensitivities, intolerances or allergies to dairy. In keeping with our ethos on avoiding processed foods where possible, they contain no margarine or vegetable shortening; the butter in the original cookies is simply replaced with extra virgin coconut oil.

So… What makes them “lactation” cookies? They contain three galactogogues (substances that may help increase milk supply): oats, brewers yeast, and linseed (flax) meal. They won’t make you lactate if you aren’t already, so they’re kid- and partner-friendly too (but don’t tell them that if you don’t want to!).
They’re packed with fibre (super important for newly postpartum mamas) from wholemeal flour and a chia/flax/hemp seed blend, and are refined sugar-free, not very sweet, and low GI to avoid blood sugar spikes and give sustained energy. Oh, but they DO have a solid helping of 70% cocoa couverture chocolate, because (quality) chocolate makes everything better.
I ate at least one of these cookies every day for the first two years of my first son’s life, and now I usually have to share them with him as he’s decided he likes them too (he calls them “breakfast biscuits”, ha). As a busy working mum I’ve found it indispensable ever since to have a jar of these in my kitchen at all times so I have something I can just grab and eat straight away when my hands are full, without feeling guilty about snacking on junk food. Now I’m breastfeeding our second baby and once again I’m grateful to have these lactation cookies on hand. I hope you love them as much as we do!
A word of warning - these cookies can dramatically increase milk supply in some people. To avoid an accidental firehose-down-the-baby’s-throat situation, I recommend starting with no more than two cookies per day until you have assessed the effect they have on your individual body chemistry.
